Why is progressive motorcycle insurance so cheap?
I got three quotes from three different insurence companies for a 2005 Honda 1100cc Sabre with under 2000 miles for $6300, all three with the same type of coverage. The first quote I got from State farm they gave me a quote for $650 for the year, the second was Geico they gave me a quote for $462 for the year, the third was Progressive they quoted me with only $220 for the year with the same exact coverage as the other 2. I am 36 years old have been riding a motorcycle for about 2 years and I am buying this 2005 1100cc Sabre. Why is Progressive so much cheaper, has anybody else used Progressive and are they a good insurance company. It just sounds too good to be true.

So, you want to get cheap auto insurance? Well who doesn’t? One option which is especially appealing is AAA auto insurance since it is so inexpensive, but first, let’s talk about what you should not do, then we’ll discuss what you can do.
One thing which is very common for people to do and very illegal as well is to register your car in an area where you don’t actually live. This is commonly done in place like New York and California, who have some of the highest insurance rates in the country. In order to get away with a cheaper deal than they could get even with AAA auto insurance, people will register their car in Montana and then drive it across the country in order to use it in New York or California. But why is this a problem you ask? Very simple really.
You see, insurance companies set their prices based on where you live. They need to know that they are not going to be taking a bigger risk than they should by insuring you and let’s face it, if you really do live in Montana, you are less likely to get your car stolen and less likely to get into an accident than if you live in a place like New York City with the bumper to bumper traffic and fender benders being a daily occurrence.
Of course, as long as you are lucky and don’t have any accidents, then you’ll be just fine since the insurance companies understand you could be visiting somewhere. However, if you happen to have an accident, you’d better be prepared for trouble. The insurance companies tend to be awfully stingy and they don’t like to waste money (not even the AAA auto insurance). So if they can find a legal way of telling you to take a hike, they’ll do it. In that case, you’d be out thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for damages not to mention that you may face criminal charges of insurance fraud and could go to jail. It just isn’t worth it at all.
That said, in some cases the AAA can save you on auto insurance. What they can do is to either provide you with their own discounted auto insurance or they can offer you a defensive driving course which could actually reduce the price of your auto insurance from a private company. That’s a much better way than registering your car in Montana. Leave that for people who actually live Butte or other cities out there.
